A group of 20 rescuers from Panama travel this friday to istanbul to participate for 10 days in the search and rescue of survivors after the earthquake that devastated that country on February 6, leaving more than 19,000 dead and tens of thousands injured so far.

The so-called Panama USAR team is made up of the Joint Task Force and led by the National Civil Protection System (Sinaproc), and includes two dogs trained to search for people in collapsed buildings.

A USAR team, as defined by the International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG), specializes in locating, extricating, and initial stabilizing personnel trapped in enclosed spaces or under rubble due to structural collapse, it said. an official statement.

The Panamanian team is made up of specialists with more than 20 years of experience in search, rescue and rescue in similar situations, such as the earthquake in Mexico in 2017; Forest fire in Chile, 2017; Hurricane Otto in Costa Rica in 2016; earthquake in Ecuador in 2016 and Haiti in 2010, according to official information.

The road map of the Panamanian mission will be defined at the Search and Rescue Team Coordination Center located in the province of Adana, where the distribution of international rescue teams is organized.

The death toll from the earthquakes that shook southeastern Turkey on Monday, with magnitudes of 7.7 and 7.6, now stands at 19,388, according to the latest data from the president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and more than 77,700 wounded.

Some 13.4 million people lived in the 10 provinces affected by Monday's earthquake, and hundreds of thousands of them have been left homeless.

The earthquakes with an epicenter in Turkey have already left at least 3,384 dead in neighboring Syria.
