Apple launches a new series of its iPhone every year and the price of the old model decreases as soon as the new phone is launched.
Better features and software are available in the new iPhone than the old one, that is why the price of the old iPhone decreases.
However, people were shocked when an old iPhone was sold for more than $ 63,000 (about Rs 52 lakh). This is the highest price ever for an original iPhone.
Old iPhone sold for 100 times more than the original price
Launched in 2007, the first generation prepackaged iPhone sold for 100 times more than its original price.
LCG Auction, the company handling the auction for the iPhone, said on its website that the device sold for $63,356.40, more than 100 times its original price.
This iPhone, launched about 15 years ago, was sold by Apple for $ 599 (about Rs 49,000).
Tattoo artist got phone as a gift
The auction company said that it was launched with 4GB and 8GB storage, 2 megapixel camera and 3.5 inch screen.
business insider Sarah Jackson was quoted as saying that the particular iPhone sold at auction belonged to Karen Green, a cosmetic tattoo artist in New Jersey.
Green received this iPhone as a gift, but never opened it because she was bound by a contract that was not available for the iPhone.
Green now sold the phone because
Green considered selling the iPhone for years, but kept the phone until he was contacted by LCG Auctions in October.
Prior to this, Green also knew that another first generation iPhone, launched in 2007, was sold for around $40,000 (about Rs 33 lakh).
The reason behind selling it was that he needed money for his cosmetic tattoo studio.
phone sold more than expected
The auction of this phone opened on 2 February and closed on 19 February. Bidding for the iPhone started at $2,500 and was expected to sell for at least $50,000, but went up to another $13,000.
Apple launched the first iPhone 16 years ago in January 2007, when Steve Jobs was its chief. Steve Jobs, announcing this phone at the Macworld conference, described it as "revolutionary".
