News of the country | Delhi: South Asian University accused of 'arbitrarily' expelling two students

New Delhi, Feb 19 (PTI) A students' body of the South Asian University (SAU) on Sunday alleged that the institution "arbitrarily" expelled two students and provisionally suspended two others.

The university's general body of students said in a statement that the university has also imposed a fine on a student.

This reported action by SAU comes weeks after a group of students protested demanding hike in scholarship and stipend. There was no immediate response from the university administration.

The students' body claimed that last month five students had received show-cause notices and were questioned by an ad-hoc "high-level" committee and on February 18, the students were informed of their expulsion and provisional expulsion from the 'proctor' Delivery emails received.

The statement said, "The SAU student community expresses its concern over the recent disciplinary actions and demands withdrawal of expulsion and provisional suspension."

According to the students' body, the administration has issued two notices of expulsion to Procheta M (MPhil, Sociology) and Apoorva YK (LLM, II year).

Keshav Swaran (MA, sociology, second year) and Rohit Kumar (PhD student, economics) have received provisional expulsion letters, while Bona Chakraborty (MA, sociology, first year) has been slapped with a fine, the statement said.

The students' body said the fresh disciplinary actions have been taken amid a move by the family of MA (Sociology) student Ammar Ahmed to file a police complaint against the university authorities.

The student body said that Ammar Ahmed had attempted suicide due to "institutional harassment". The organization claimed that Ammar was also "arbitrarily provisionally expelled" by the university administration and had to be hospitalized for a long time. The students' body said Ammar suffered from various complications, including difficulty in walking and speaking.

Another student termed the university's action as "institutional violence".

SAU is an international university in Delhi that was established through an agreement between the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). Its objective is to provide education to the students of all the eight member countries.
