BCCI Honorary Secretary Jay Shah said on Sunday that India captain Rohit Sharma will not be able to play in the first ODI against Australia in his hometown Mumbai on March 17 due to some family commitments. Shah said in a release on Sunday, vice-captain Hardik Pandya will take charge of the ODI team in Rohit's absence. The selectors have also given a chance to left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja after his impressive bowling in the two Tests against Australia. Akshar Patel and KL Rahul, who were rested for the New Zealand ODI, were also brought back, as were KS Bharat and Shahbaz Ahmed.
Hardik Pandya along with Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj will be part of the fast bowling along with Shardul Thakur, Umran Malik and Jaydev Unadkat, while Kuldeep Yadav, Washington Sundar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Akshar Patel and Jadeja will handle the spin department.
In-form Shubman Gill scored a double century in the series against New Zealand. Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav have also found their place in the crucial series as India prepare for this year's ODI World Cup at home.
The second and third ODIs of the series will be played in Visakhapatnam (March 19) and Chennai (March 2).
