Moreno Rojas, who would turn 63 this Saturday, was imprisoned in a police facility in the Colombian capital where he was serving a 25-year sentence for his responsibility in a corruption scandal known as the “hiring carousel” at the time he was mayor of Bogotá.

That scandal broke out in 2010 when it came to light the payment of bribes by contractors to politicians and officials to obtain million-dollar tenders for works and services in the Colombian capital.

The former mayor, who was born in Miami (USA) during the exile of his parents -María Eugenia Rojas and Samuel Moreno Díaz, and his grandfather-, suffered a heart attack on Thursday for which he was admitted to the Military Hospital where He arrived "without vital signs" and underwent resuscitation, according to a medical report.

A statement from the Military Hospital explained yesterday that the patient “He was brought by carabineros of the National Police, he arrived without vital signs. Advanced cardio/cerebropulmonary resuscitation support was started” by a multidisciplinary team.

After these medical maneuvers, he was managed to revive him and he was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit with a "reserved" prognosis.

Moreno Rojas, who was mayor and senator for the leftist Polo Democrático Alternativo (PDA) party, from which he was expelled in 2011, was benefited in 2022 by the Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice with a reduction in his sentence to 11 years and 10 months in prison.

In the Democratic Pole, Moreno Rojas was a party partner of the then senator and current Colombian president, Gustavo Petro.

As a result of the corruption scandal, Moreno Rojas was suspended from office in May 2011 by the then attorney general, Alejandro Ordóñez, and was arrested in September of the same year.
